The essential Rimsky box: colourful, intense, incisive, grave, effervescent. A blockbusting six disc set of Svetlanov’s Rimsky recordings is bound to be of interest to collectors even when, as here, it’s a compilation of well known performances garnered over a two decade span and not a revealing tranche of rare performances.
  3. Bralabar says:
Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov's opera Mlada is a Wagner-influenced epic teeming with national conflicts and battles in the spirit world; it draws on Russian myth, yet contains parallels to Goethe's Faust as well, making for a formidable challenge indeed for performer and listener. However, Rimsky-Korsakov was enough of a professional to prepare a short suite of catchy dances as he readied the opera.

Holy cow! A BBC “Legend” actually worthy of the name! There have been a few–some fine piano recitals (Richter, Michelangeli) or that Giulini Verdi Requiem–but basically it’s been the very worst of Barbirolli plus one dreary air-check after another of works the same artists did better in the studio.

Sep 04,  · Yevgeny Svetlanov's pot-pourri from Rimsky-Korsakov's operas is a mixture of recordings from the early s and mids, the older ones betraying their age with a tubby, vibrato-laden brass sound.
  7. Kazihn says:
In anyone's book these are great Rimsky-Korsakov readings to which Svetlanov, ever the incendiary, injects passion and brimstone. The orchestra play as if possessed. If you doubt me the listen to the cauldron of whipped sound at in the overture.
